Best Baby Gifts in Canada | A Boutique Owner's Guide

Shopping for a new baby? Here's what I'd actually buy.

As a mom of two and the owner of Wild Baby, a children's boutique in Ontario, I've helped a whole lot of people put together baby gifts over the years.

From excited first-time grandparents to friends shopping for baby showers, one of the questions we get asked most often is some version of:

“I want to get them something really nice, but I have no idea what to buy!”

And I get it! There are approximately a million adorable baby products out there, and it can be surprisingly hard to know what new parents will actually use.

After years of helping customers choose gifts (and having two babies of my own), I've developed some pretty strong opinions about what makes a great baby gift.

My philosophy is simple: Something cute, something useful, and, if you can, something for mom.

You don't need to spend a fortune, and you definitely don't need to buy the biggest gift at the baby shower.

A few thoughtfully chosen pieces will always win in my books.

Here are my favourite baby gifts, the things our customers love buying, and a few tips for putting together a gift that actually feels special.

1. A Really Cute Sleeper or Outfit

If I'm choosing a gift for a new baby, a beautiful little outfit is almost always where I start.

There's just something about tiny baby clothes!

But rather than grabbing the first cute thing I see, I like to think about the family's personal style.

Are they more neutral and minimal? Do they love colour? Are they outdoorsy? Do they gravitate toward classic, timeless pieces?

I love choosing something that feels like it belongs in their family.

A thoughtfully selected outfit feels so much more personal than a generic baby gift.

My biggest tip? Size up a little.

When customers come into Wild Baby looking for newborn clothing, I usually recommend either 0–3 months or 3–6 months.

Babies grow so quickly, and choosing a slightly larger size can give parents something to look forward to once the newborn stage has passed.

Of course, the time of year matters too. You don't want to buy a winter outfit that will fit perfectly in July!

Best for: Baby showers, newborn visits, first-time parents and anyone wanting to give a beautiful, personal gift.

2. Crinkle Books — One of Our Favourite Little Gifts

I absolutely love giving crinkle books.

They're adorable, easy to add to a gift, and they're one of the popular baby gift items at Wild Baby.

I especially love them because they feel like a little something extra without having to spend a huge amount of money.

You can pair one with an outfit, add it to a swaddle, or tuck it into a larger gift basket.

And they're not just cute! Soft crinkle books give babies something to look at, touch and explore as they grow, with supervision and in line with the product's age recommendations.

One of my favourite options is our Soft Bunny Crinkle Book.

Best for: Small baby gifts, gift baskets, baby shower presents and adding a thoughtful extra to an outfit.

3. Teethers and Little Accessories

Sometimes the best baby gifts are the little things.

At Wild Baby, flower teethers are a popular choice, and I love using accessories to make a gift feel a little more complete.

A cute teether, a baby book or a thoughtfully chosen accessory can turn one item into a lovely little collection.

The trick is choosing pieces that make sense together rather than buying a bunch of random things.

For example, a soft sleeper paired with a crinkle book and a teether makes a really sweet gift.

It's simple, adorable and practical.

Just pay attention to the manufacturer's recommended age and use instructions, especially for teething products and pacifier accessories.

Best for: Adding to a baby gift, affordable gifts and putting together a coordinated gift set.

4. A Beautiful Swaddle (But Don't Go Crazy on Blankets!)

Swaddles are another popular baby gift at Wild Baby.

They're lovely, easy to coordinate with other items and often make a beautiful addition to a newborn present.

One option I like is a Lulujo Muslin Swaddle.

But here's one of my slightly unpopular opinions:

You really don't need to go crazy buying blankets for a new baby.

It's one of those gifts that everyone seems to gravitate toward, and parents can end up with more blankets than they know what to do with.

I would much rather give one beautiful swaddle and pair it with something else than buy a whole pile of blankets.

And remember, safe sleep guidelines still apply: loose blankets and swaddles shouldn't be left in a baby's sleep space.

Best for: Classic newborn gifts and creating a pretty, coordinated gift.

5. Gift Cards (They're Not Impersonal, I Promise!)

I know gift cards sometimes get a bad reputation for being a boring or last-minute gift.

But as a mom, I can tell you that being able to choose exactly what you need is pretty wonderful.

And as a boutique owner, I've seen how much people appreciate having that flexibility.

Maybe the baby arrives bigger than expected. Maybe the parents already have enough newborn clothes. Or maybe there's a particular outfit they've had their eye on.

A gift card lets them choose.

I especially like the idea of pairing a gift card with one small, thoughtful item, like a crinkle book or a little accessory.

That way, there's still something sweet to unwrap, but the parents get the freedom to pick what they need.

Best for: Parents who already have lots of baby items, second or third babies, and shoppers who aren't sure about sizing or style.

6. Something for Mom — My Favourite Finishing Touch

Okay, this one might actually be my favourite piece of advice.

Please don't forget about mom.

I absolutely love when customers come into Wild Baby and make a point of including something just for her.

Sometimes it's a necklace or a piece of jewellery. Sometimes it's something from our wellness collection. Other times it's a beautiful piece of clothing.

It's such a thoughtful gesture.

Because while everyone is understandably excited about the new baby, mom deserves a little love too.

When I'm putting together a baby gift for someone I know, my personal go-to is usually:

  • A really cute outfit that matches the family's style

  • A crinkle book for baby

  • Beck's Broth for mom

  • A pack of Blume electrolytes for mom

It's a combination I love because there's something special for baby and something just for her.

Of course, with food and wellness products, I always think it's worth considering mom's preferences and dietary needs first.

You don't have to spend a huge amount of money on this part, either.

Even one small addition that says “I thought of you, too” can make a gift feel so much more personal.

Best for: Close friends, sisters, daughters, baby showers and anyone who wants to make a new mom feel extra loved.

How Much Should You Spend on a Baby Gift?

This is probably one of the most common things we help people figure out at Wild Baby.

And the answer is: whatever feels comfortable for you!

You can put together a beautiful gift at almost any price point.

Here's how I like to approach it.

Baby Gifts Under $50

I would choose a book and a swaddle or a sweet little accessory.

It's simple, thoughtful and doesn't need a huge budget.

Baby Gifts Around $100

This is where I love putting together a complete little gift.

My usual recommendation would be a cute outfit, a book and an accessory.

It feels personal, looks lovely together and includes a nice mixture of clothing and little extras.

Baby Gifts Over $100

If you have a little more to spend, this is where I'd add something for mom.

Start with an outfit, a book and an accessory, then choose a couple of thoughtful treats just for her.

I think it's such a lovely way to celebrate the whole family.

What I Would Actually Put in a $150 Baby Gift Basket

If someone walked into Wild Baby and asked me to put together a beautiful, practical newborn gift with a budget of around $150, here's one combination I would choose.

My Wild Baby Gift Picks:

  1. The Perfect Sleeper — A sweet outfit to start the gift.

  2. Soft Bunny Crinkle Book — One of my favourite kinds of baby accessories.

  3. Lulujo Muslin Swaddle — A classic newborn gift.

  4. Silicone Teething Feeder — A practical item for when baby is old enough to use it.

  5. Wood + Silicone Pacifier Clip — A sweet accessory for parents who plan to use pacifiers.

  6. Feeder Freezer Tray — Something practical for a future feeding stage.

  7. Wild Baby Greeting Card — Because a personal note is always a lovely finishing touch.

This combination comes to approximately $150, based on the items I've selected.

What I love about a gift like this is that it isn't just a collection of newborn clothes. There are sweet things to enjoy now, plus a few practical items the family can use as their baby grows.

And honestly, I think that's what makes a great baby gift.

Product prices and availability may change.

What Should You Buy for a Second or Third Baby?

This is another question I love helping customers with.

When someone is having their second or third baby, chances are they already have a lot of the essentials.

They might not need another stack of receiving blankets, newborn outfits or baby accessories.

So my recommendation is usually to focus a little more on mom.

A thoughtful gift just for her can be such a lovely surprise.

If you do want to buy something for baby, I like sticking with books or clothing in sizes 3 months and up.

It's a nice way to give something new and special without adding to a mountain of newborn items they might already own.

And if you're really unsure, a gift card is always a good option.

How to Make a Baby Gift Feel More Special

Here's something I've learned after helping people put together so many gifts: you don't need to spend the most money to give the nicest present.

A little thought goes a long way.

I love choosing items that coordinate, adding a meaningful accessory or keepsake, and thinking about the family's personal style.

For example, rather than choosing five random baby products, I would much rather give a beautiful sleeper, a little book and something thoughtful for mom.

It feels intentional.

And if you can add a handwritten note? Even better.

Sometimes those little details make a bigger impression than the gift itself.

My Biggest Advice When Buying a Newborn Gift

If you take one thing away from this guide, I hope it's this:

Don't overthink it.

You don't need to find the most expensive baby product or buy something they've never seen before.

A beautiful little outfit, a thoughtful accessory, a good book or a gift card can all make wonderful gifts.

Think about the family you're shopping for. Choose things that feel like them. And if you can, add a little something for mom.

That's my idea of a perfect baby gift.

Happy gifting!
