How Many Sleepers Does a Newborn Actually Need?

How Many Sleepers Does a Newborn Actually Need?

By Cass, Owner of Wild Baby

If you're expecting a baby, chances are you've already started thinking about all the tiny little clothes you're going to need.

And if you've spent any time shopping for newborn clothing, you probably know how easy it is to get carried away.

The sleepers! The little matching sets! The impossibly tiny socks!

But one question I think is worth asking before filling an entire dresser is:

How many sleepers does a newborn actually need?

At Wild Baby, we're all about choosing beautiful, quality pieces that you'll genuinely love using. And when it comes to getting ready for a new baby, I think a thoughtfully chosen wardrobe is much better than an overflowing one.

Here's my advice on how many sleepers to buy, which styles I love and what I think is actually worth investing in.

So, How Many Sleepers Does a Newborn Need?

My recommendation is to start with 6–10 sleepers.

I think that's a really nice number to have ready before your baby arrives.

It's enough that you aren't constantly feeling like you need to do laundry, but not so many that you're drowning in tiny clothes before your baby is even born.

Of course, every family is different.

Some babies go through several outfits a day, while others seem to stay perfectly clean. Your laundry routine will also make a difference.

If you know you don't want to do laundry very often, you might prefer having a few extra sleepers on hand.

But personally, I think 6–10 is a lovely starting point.

You can always add more once you know what you actually reach for.

What Size Sleepers Should You Buy Before Baby Arrives?

Here's where I would encourage you not to get too carried away.

Babies grow quickly, and some spend very little time in newborn-size clothing.

Rather than buying ten newborn sleepers, I would suggest having a mix of sizes ready.

For example:

  • 2–3 newborn sleepers, depending on your baby's expected size.

  • 4–5 sleepers in 0–3 months.

  • A few sleepers in 3–6 months, so you have something ready for the next stage.

It's not an exact formula, and you certainly don't need to purchase every size immediately.

I just think it's nice to plan ahead a little without overbuying those smallest sizes.

Remember, baby clothing sizes can vary between brands, so it's always worth checking the individual size charts.

Two-Way Zippers Are My Favourite

If I could recommend one feature to look for when shopping for baby sleepers, it would absolutely be a two-way zipper.

I love them.

A two-way zipper allows you to open the sleeper from the bottom, which can make diaper changes so much easier.

Instead of having to completely undress your baby, you can simply unzip the bottom portion.

It's one of those little details that I think makes such a difference in everyday life.

That's not to say regular zippers or snaps are bad. There are beautiful sleepers made with all kinds of closures.

But if I'm choosing?

Two-way zippers, every time.

My Favourite Sleeper Fabric: Organic Cotton

I'm a big fan of organic cotton baby clothing.

There's something so lovely about a beautiful, soft cotton fabric, especially for clothing that babies wear so often.

And when you're purchasing pieces that will be washed regularly, fabric quality is something I think is worth paying attention to.

I love choosing sleepers that feel beautiful in your hands and hold up well with repeated washing.

For me, that's where investing in quality baby clothing really makes sense.

Of course, always check the individual product's fabric composition. Even within the same brand, materials can vary from one style to another.

My Favourite Brand for Baby Sleepers? Quincy Mae.

If you've spent any time shopping at Wild Baby, you probably know how much we love Quincy Mae.

And their organic cotton is one of the biggest reasons why.

I find the fabric so lovely. It's thick, incredibly soft and, in my experience, washes beautifully.

It's exactly the kind of quality I love when choosing clothing for little ones.

When you're buying something that will be worn and washed over and over again, those details matter to me.

I also love how thoughtfully designed their pieces are.

If you're building a newborn wardrobe, I'd definitely recommend taking a look at the styles they offer.

Footed vs. Footless Sleepers: Which Is Better?

This really comes down to personal preference.

Some parents absolutely love footed sleepers, especially for keeping little feet covered.

Personally, I tend to prefer footless sleepers or convertible styles with fold-over feet and hands.

I love the flexibility of being able to fold the feet over when needed and leave them open at other times.

And with footless styles, you don't have to worry about your baby's feet outgrowing the footed portion before the rest of the outfit.

That can be particularly nice when you're trying to get as much wear as possible out of your favourite pieces.

Whatever style you choose, make sure the sleeper fits properly, allows comfortable movement and is appropriate for the room temperature.

One Thing I'd Skip: Hooded Clothing for Young Babies

Here's something I think is often overlooked when buying baby clothes.

I generally recommend avoiding hoods on clothing for babies six months and under, especially when choosing pieces for sleeping.

I find that the extra fabric tends to get in the way.

And from a sleep-safety perspective, simple, fitted sleepwear without a hood is the better choice.

Health Canada specifically advises that babies are safest in well-fitting sleepwear, such as a sleeper, and that daywear with hoods and other extra features can create hazards during sleep.

So while a tiny hooded outfit might look adorable for a daytime outing, I wouldn't choose one as part of a baby's sleep wardrobe.

Do You Need Different Sleepers for Day and Night?

Not necessarily!

One of the things I love about beautiful baby sleepers is that they're so versatile.

A comfortable sleeper can be an everyday outfit, something cozy to wear around the house and an easy option for bedtime, provided it's designed and appropriate for sleep.

There's no need to have an entirely separate wardrobe just for nighttime.

I'd much rather have a small collection of really lovely sleepers that get worn regularly.

For sleeping, always choose properly fitted sleepwear and dress your baby for the room temperature to avoid overheating.

Should You Buy More Sleepers Before Baby Is Born?

My advice? Start with your 6–10 and see how you go.

You might discover that you absolutely love a certain brand or zipper style.

You might realize your baby grows out of one size faster than you expected.

Or you might find that you actually need fewer clothes than you thought.

That's the beauty of starting with a thoughtfully selected wardrobe instead of purchasing everything at once.

You can figure out what works for your family and build from there.

My Newborn Sleeper Shopping Checklist

If I were putting together a newborn sleeper wardrobe, here's what I'd focus on:

  • 6–10 sleepers to start, spread across appropriate sizes.

  • Two-way zippers wherever possible.

  • Beautiful, quality fabrics, especially organic cotton.

  • Footless or convertible styles for a little extra flexibility.

  • Properly fitted sleepwear without hoods for bedtime.

  • A few pieces in the next size up, so you're prepared when your baby grows.

It doesn't need to be complicated.

Choose pieces you love, pay attention to quality, and don't feel pressured to buy more than you need.

A Final Thought

Preparing for a new baby is exciting, and shopping for all those tiny little clothes should be part of the fun.

But you don't need an overflowing dresser to be prepared.

I think 6–10 thoughtfully chosen sleepers, in a mix of sizes, is a wonderful place to start.

Invest in fabrics you love, choose practical details that make your life easier, and give yourself permission to figure out the rest as you go.

At Wild Baby, we've carefully selected baby clothing from brands we genuinely love, with beautiful fabrics and thoughtful details in mind.
